Power Chocolates were started as a result of a huge personal craving for dark chocolate with nuts.
My name is Deb Derecktor and I have been a true chocoholic since as long as I can remember (early childhood). To fill this massive and very specific craving I searched the shelves in my home town in every store that sold high quality chocolate bars. All I could find was milk chocolate with nuts and usually the chocolate had additives or tropical oils I didn't want.
With allergies to dairy 'milk chocolate' wouldn't do. I noticed that dark chocolate might be accompanied by fruit or all alone, but never with the protein component I could feel my body needed. With other health issues I have accumulated over time, I had to be very cautious about what I put in my body. Wheat and dairy products were definitely out. I had given up chocolate for a while, much to my dismay, but when I found out that pure dark chocolate without the milk, was good for you I decided to see how my body reacted to it.
I researched the health qualities of dark chocolate that the world was discovering. How exciting! I could eat my absolute favorite food of all time. It's actually good for you. This was the best news ever. But I still had to eat it in the most healthy was possible to acommodate my body's growing need for super quality nutrition to cope with the stresses of daily life and naturally getting older.
This craving for the balance of protein (nuts) and chocolate was so intense and specific and my frustration in not being able to find it led me to make my own. I bought the highest quality chocolate off the shelves I could find, melted it and added organic roasted almonds. I was also learning about Flax Seeds and their amazing health benefits. I have always loved Sesame Seeds as well and thought it might be a good combination. Anything to get the chocolate healthier so I could have it.
I had given up coffee, refined white flour and sugar, and everything processed, but chocolate I felt I couldn't live without. The craving for chocolate never went away, the passion for it always at my side. As I learned about it's health benefits, all the chemicals it contained that help your heart and brain, eyes and overall health as long as it was pure dark and combined with other Super Foods, and as I found my body feeling great after eating what I was starting to refer to as my Power Chocolates, I realized my wish and passion could be fulfilled.
After many batches, taste testing and searching the planet for the best chocolate I could find and many other people craving the recipe as I was, I decided to make it into a business so other people could enjoy them as well. My family and I eat Power Chocolates every day in all their combinations.
My husband Woody and three kids, Eliza, Riley and Lily all help with what is becoming our family business. We roast the seeds together, do the wrapping and of course the taste testing of new recipes and old favorites.
I have great fun inventing new recipes, always based on my own or a family member's personal craving and health research. Our friends and family have become great fans and regular customers, as well as the people in the mid-coast area of Maine and people we sell to all around the country.
